The Great Glen Ride

This is another Coast to Coast ride, following the Great Glen fault from Fort William in the West, to Inverness in the East. We mostly follow the route of the Great Glen Way long distance trail, with a few excursions for better riding!

5 Day Ride - Southern Side

(5 days riding, 4 nights accommodation, full board)

This ride leaves from Inverness and we ride along the Southern side of the glen, on the 'Seven Lochs trail, through the forests overlooking the great glen. We stop for the night at Dores at the head of Loch Ness. From Dores, we take the path through the forests again climbing the Fair Headed Lads pass, for stunning views over Loch Ness to the hills far to the North. We finish for the night at Whitebridge.

Leaving Whitebridge, we take minor roads and tracks with stunning views over the Glen from the Suidhe Chuimein viewpoint, descending to Fort Augustus, then ride on to Auchterawe where we spend the night.

The final day - We either ride through Leanachan forest, below the Aonoch More Ski Slopes, to Fort William, beneath Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, crossing the river to finish beside Neptunes Staircase, or if the river is high, we ride beside the Caledonian Canal, then through the forest at Glen Loy, before rejoining the canal to finish beside Neptunes Staircase.

5 day ride - Northern side

(5 days riding, 4 nights accommodation, full board)

Starting high on a hill, just North of Inverness, we ride on the old drove road, used to drive cattle to market for centuries before heading into the forest high above Loch Ness with some great views over the loch to the Monadliath mountains beyond. We stop for the night at Drumnadrochit and the following day, climb again even higher into the hills with fantastic views in all directions on the new 'High Path' of the Great Glen Way. Our accommodation is in Invermoriston. From here we continue along the Great Glen Way, great views and plenty of opportunities to canter on the forest trails above the Loch. It's always worth looking out for the Loch Ness Monster - just in case!

From Fort Augustus, we ride along the tow path of the Caledonian Canal, then beside beautiful Loch Oich - again, plenty of opportunities to canter, before heading again into the forest to take us to Invergarry for the night. Heading out from Invergarry, we back track for a couple of kilometres, before riding on beside Loch Lochy. Great views over the loch to the Grey Corries range beyond and also Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK. Lots of cantering again. The final day we ride again beside the Caledonian Canal, then into the forests of Glen Loy, before rejoining the Canal again to finish beside Neptunes Staircase a series of locks at the end of the Cannal.
